Why Audition with NSWYO ?

The NSW Youth Orchestra brings together some of the very best young musicians from Sydney and New South Wales, to perform concerts of the highest standard.

In collaboration with eminent orchestral musicians, conductors, soloists and educators, NSWYO delivers exceptional orchestral training and performance experiences for talented musicians under 25 years old.

In 2017, NSWYO’s spectacular concert series features some of the most challenging and rewarding orchestral works ever written.

We will perform alongside several of Australia’s most prominent soloists, both established and emerging, in major Sydney concert halls.

Mahler Symphony No. 1, ‘The Titan’
Dvorak Symphony No. 8

GLINKA  Ruslan and Ludmilla Overture

SHOSTAKOVICH  Piano Concerto No.2



Audition details

Auditions are conducted by appointment, with applications open all year round.

Applicants must be aged 25 or younger on 1 January 2017.

Minimum standard: AMEB Grade 7+, or equivalent.

Auditions will be 5-10 minutes in length. There is a non-refundable audition fee of $35 to cover the costs of the venue and panel.

Applicants are required to perform a prepared piece and orchestral excerpts. Full details will be sent to you upon application.


Musicians are expected to attend at least 80% of rehearsals throughout the year.

Rehearsals are held at Crows Nest Centre in North Sydney on Friday evenings from 6:30pm to 9:15pm, excluding school holidays. BBQ or pizza is provided from 6pm every week.

In order to ensure that the orchestra is able to give the best possible performance at each concert, you would be expected to:

  • Be available for at least 80% of rehearsals and all tutorials;
  • Inform us well in advance of any rehearsal you cannot attend;
  • Assist with setup and pack up of the rehearsal/concert venues;
  • Carry out sufficient private practice between rehearsals; and
  • Pay membership fees on time, to help support the general running costs of the orchestra.


NSWYO membership is an annual fee of $500. A discount of 20% ($100) is offered to all players for early payment of fees.


A number of scholarships will be awarded to NSWYO musicians. Scholarships are offered following completion of NSWYO auditions.
