Why Audition with NSWYO ?
The NSW Youth Orchestra brings together many of the very best young musicians from Sydney and around NSW, to perform acclaimed concerts of the highest standard.
In collaboration with eminent orchestral musicians, conductors, soloists and educators, we deliver exceptional orchestral training and performance experiences for talented musicians under 25 years old.
In 2018, NSWYO’s spectacular concert series features some of the most challenging and rewarding orchestral works ever written.
We will perform alongside several of Australia’s most prominent soloists – both established and emerging – in major Sydney concert halls.
Audition applications close Sunday 11th February 2018 11:59pm.
All Auditions will be via video.
Applicants must be aged 25 or younger on 1 January 2018.
Minimum standard: AMEB Grade 7 or equivalent.
There is a non-refundable audition fee of $40.00 to cover costs.
You will play a 2min solo of your choice (can be whole or part of a piece) followed by all the excerpts for your instrument.
The video must not be stopped at any time during this performance or you will have to start again.
Video recordings may not be edited, nor any effects added. Phone videos are acceptable. You will not be penalized for the quality of your video, although it is important that it is good enough to see and hear you clearly.
Videos should be available for watching online – download links will not be accepted.

Musicians are expected to attend at least 80% of rehearsals throughout the year.
Rehearsals are held in Crows Nest on Friday evenings from 6:30pm to 9:15pm, excluding school holidays. BBQ or pizza is provided from 6pm every week.
In order to ensure that the orchestra is able to give the best possible performance at each concert, you would be expected to:
- Be available for at least 80% of rehearsals and all tutorials;
- Inform us well in advance of any rehearsal you cannot attend;
- Assist with setup and packup of the rehearsal/concert venues;
- Carry out sufficient private practice in your own time between rehearsals; and
- Pay membership fees on time, to help support the general running costs of the orchestra.
NSWYO membership is an annual fee of $600. Payment plans available.
A discount of 20% ($120) is offered to all players if payment of $480 is made by the 1st rehearsal on Friday 16th March 2018.
A number of merit-based scholarships will be awarded to NSWYO musicians. Scholars will be selected from their NSWYO audition.
