Why Audition with NSWYO ?
The NSW Youth Orchestra brings together many of the very best young musicians from Sydney and around NSW, to perform acclaimed concerts of the highest standard.
In collaboration with eminent orchestral musicians, conductors, soloists and educators, we deliver exceptional orchestral training and performance experiences for talented musicians under 25 years old.
In 2017, we started our collaboration with renowned conductor Fabian Russell. Our concerts were huge successes and greatly enjoyed by our members. In 2018, NSWYO’s spectacular concert series will feature some of the most challenging and rewarding orchestral works ever written.
We will perform alongside several of Australia’s most prominent soloists – both established and emerging – in major Sydney concert halls.
All Auditions will be via video.
Applicants must be aged 25 or younger on 1 January 2018.
Playing standard: equivalent to ~ AMEB Grade 6 or higher.
There is a non-refundable application fee of $40 to cover costs.
Results will be available and positions offered from Monday 12 March 2018.
Priority will be given to applicants playing all 3 concerts for competitive positions.
Acceptance of positions is not confirmed until membership fee (see below) is paid.
You will play a 1-2 min solo of your choice (can be whole or part of a piece) followed by all the excerpts for your instrument. Players aged 16 or less can choose to play any 3 of the excerpts provided.
The video must not be stopped during the recording. If it is, you will have to start again.
Video recordings may not be edited, nor any effects added. Phone videos are acceptable. You will not be penalized for the quality of your video, although it is important that it is good enough to see and hear you clearly.
Videos should be available for watching online – download links will not be accepted.
If you submit YouTube links, be sure your videos have the proper settings:

Musicians are expected to attend at least 90% of rehearsals throughout the year.
Rehearsals are held in the Crows Nest Community Centre on Friday evenings from 6:30pm to 9:15pm, excluding school holidays. BBQ or pizza is provided from 6pm every week. There are extra rehearsals in the week before the concert.
In order to ensure that the orchestra is able to give the best possible performance at each concert, you would be expected to:
- Attend at least 90% of rehearsals and tutorials
- Inform us well in advance of any rehearsal you cannot attend, and if you are playing a soloistic part, to help find a substitute player
- Assist with setup and packup of the rehearsal/concert venues
- Practice sufficiently in your own time so that you are proficient with the music
- Pay membership fees on time without needing us to chase you
For all 3 concerts: $600
For 1 concert: $250
- Earlybird: 10% discount if payment is received before the first rehearsal on Friday 16th March 2018.
- Tertiary: 10% discount for tertiary students (student card required), can be in addition to earlybird
Payment plans are available. Please contact us to discuss.
A number of merit-based scholarships will be awarded to NSWYO musicians. Scholars will be selected from their NSWYO audition.
In cases of genuine financial hardships (proof required), NSWYO may consider fee reductions.
